You Won’t Believe What the Song “Get Lucky” Really Means
Today one of my students was very surprised to discover that one of her favorite songs by Daft Punk (Get Lucky) was NOT really about “luck,” but rather ABOUT SEX. I did a quick google search and every translation I found in Portuguese and Spanish completely missed the real meaning of the song.
They all translated it literally to “have luck” or to “do well,” but the common colloquial definition of GET LUCKY is to HAVE SEX. GET SOME also means to HAVE SEX. The chorus repeats itself over and over:
She’s up all night ’til the sun (to not go to sleep)
I’m up all night to get some (have sex)
She’s up all night for good fun
I’m up all night to get lucky (have sex)

i dont believe it !! This was one of my favorite songs 🙁
Why would the topic change this ?
This is still a great song. Don’t let some as small as a sexual reference ruin this for you.
LOL! Good explanation!
I knew it 😉
hahahaha it makes sense right?!?!?!
Give your opinion: how the others verses relate to the chorus?
Like the legend of the phoenix
All ends with beginnings
What keeps the planet spinning
The force from the beginning
We've come too far
To give up who we are
So let's raise the bar
And our cups to the stars
What does Daft Punk mean with that? Does it mean that finding someone to have sex is, somewhat, a life challenge??????????
Yeap! It means get laid!
Lol I always thoguht it meant "to get a girl", or get lucky with a girl, not necessarily having sex with the girl, just to flirt a bit or to have some making out with her. 🙁 😀 But I was slightly wrong, I see.
lol come on many people know how get lucky lol and is not a secret
Many is not most!
Great interpretation Anna! I definitely agree that the song has a lot of depth. I would say that that's definitely a valid interpretation!
i Always thought tthat "get "Lucky" was something like, "ser sortudo" "ter sorte".. kkkk
It means that too, Lais! It’s just that sometimes our luck can be perverted!
‘she’means an ancient female bird called phoenix in the greek mythology that has a lot with the sun god.’she’s up all night t d sun…’
Thanks for your comment Chidi! I think you captured the depth of the song, which is the flip side of the shallowness I wrote about. Thanks for offering that explanation!
“get lucky” was a colloquial term , however this song was really about being up all night to hopefully score a hit song
Thank you Oli for your input!
My dad told me this when I was little, I looked it up to see if he was lying or not so thank you
When I was listening to the song I swear it sounded like they were saying “Mexican monkeys”. Then I had to google the lyrics to make sure that it wasn’t a racist song like some are nowadays.
hahahah that’s hilarious Pablo!!
That’s not funny
it’s so absurd it’s funny!
This is a lie
Daft punk would never do that
they probably would
There’s a surprise. I thought is was all about getting laid in the first place.
It’s true, get lucky is a slang to “have sex”, and the lyrics “all night, get some, and good fun” all could be easily associated to “have sex”.
But the song is not all about sex or one night stand. There are other songs like that, and you can read the entire lyrics that this song is different and a bit more complicated than that (than just a one night stand sex).
Though the nature of the song (disco song) and lack of lyrics makes it a bit more difficult.
Also, Williams (the vocal and co-writer) claims that “the title does not simply refer to sexual acts, but to the good fortune of meeting with and immediately connecting to someone.”
If the fact that this song have strong association with sex still makes you irk, just make this song your guilty pleasure and only listen to it privately.
im gonna be honest thats what i assumed from the start
aha yes sex very funny
