Lesson Transcript

Intro (Justin)

Aww Yeah Global Citizens, I’m Justin, your RealLife English Fluency Coach!

In today’s Learn English with TV lesson, I’m going to teach you 13 expressions from a hilarious scene from the popular American TV Show, How I Met Your Mother.

In this scene, Marshall and Lily, discover the doppleganger, or look-alike, of their friend Barney. To give you an example of a real life doppleganger, here’s Leonardo DiCaprio, and here’s his doppleganger.

This will be a 3 step lesson.

In step 01, I’m going to show you the first part of the scene, with English subtitles, then in step 02 I’m going to teach you some things, taken directly from this power lesson, which you can download for free on the link above, and in the information box below.

And finally, in step 3- you’re going to watch it again without subtitles, with a completely new perspective.

Let’s do this! Aww Yeah!!!

Step 1- Watch Scene (Transcript Below)

*bold words are the words covered in this lesson*

NARRATOR: Kids up to this point in the story, we had found dopplegangers, eery but awesome look-alikes, for 4 of the 5 members of our little group. There was Lesbian Robin, Mustache Marshall, Stripper Lily, and Mexican Wrestler Me. Yes, mine was the coolest. And so we were all eager to find the 5th doppleganger, Barney’s. Turned out it was more important to some of us than others.

LILY: We agree there’s no sense in having a baby until we’ve seen all 5 dopplegangers, right.

MARSHALL: Yeah, of course. Stands to reason.

LILY: So, when we finally see Barney’s doppleganger, that’s the universe telling us it’s go time, and that’s when we’ll start trying. Deal?

MARSHALL: Deal.

NARRATOR: And then one day, a few weeks later….

MARSHALL: Baby, were you serious about the whole 5th doppleganger. I mean having a baby is a pretty big thing to leave up to the universe.

LILY: Yeah, I know it’s crazy. It’s just so much easier to let the universe decide. Why do you ask?

MARSHALL: Boom! Universed.

LILY: Oh my God!

Step 2 (Watch/ Study- Justin’s Lesson)

How did step 1 go? What percent did you understand? If you understood the general idea, awesome, but just so you know, that scene was packed with advanced vocabulary, which we’re going to take a closer look at right now.

Aww yeah! Let’s move on to step 02!!!

AUDIO: Kids up to this point in the story

  • The narrator of How I Met Your Mother is the older version of Ted (one of the main characters) in the year 2030.
  • The series is the story of how Ted met their mother.

AUDIO: DOPPLEGANGER: eery but awesome look-alikes

  • Eery is to cause an inexplicable feeling of weirdness or even fear
    • here’s a very eery scene with a dog on a very strange street
  • Look-alike is someone who looks like or resembles another person
    • In this case Barney. In this case, here’s a real life doppleganger of Barney- it seems he’s a basketball player.

AUDIO: Stripper Lilly and Mexican Wrestler Me

  • Stripper is a person who removes their clothes in a sexually exciting way
    • Here’s a picture of Stripper Lily- she looks just like Lily
  • Mexican Wrestler Me (Ted)
    • Here’s a picture of a Wrestler
    • And here’s a picture of TED, the narrator

AUDIO: And so we were all eager to find the 5th doppleganger: Barney’s.

  • Eager is to be enthusiastic about doing something
  • Here’s a picture of a student who is very eager to answer the teacher’s question

AUDIO: (It) turned out it was more important to some of us than others.

  • To Turn out is to happen in a particular way, or to have a result

AUDIO: We agree there’s no sense in having a baby until we’ve seen all 5 dopplegangers, right? Of course, Stands to Reason

  • Stands to Reason means it’s obvious, based on the facts (not very common)

AUDIO: That’s the universe telling us it’s go time. And that’s when we’ll start trying. Deal? Deal.

  • Go time is the planned start time for something specific
  • Start Trying to have a baby
  • (It’s a) deal is to arrive at an agreement or contract

AUDIO: Having a baby is a pretty big thing to leave up to the universe

  • to leave up to is to cede or release control or power for a decision

AUDIO: Why do you ask? Boom! Universed.

  • Boom! Is a sound used to affirm something exciting and/ or unexpected
  • Universed! A verb that Marshall invented to give action to the noun “universe.” (this is not a real word)
  • English is a fun language that can be used to make verbs from nouns (two more examples VERBING a NOUN include: to google- I don’t believe you. Let me google that” or to friend “Hey can you friend me on Facebook”

*The rest is not taught on this video (only on the free Power Lesson)*

LILY: Wait wait wait, hold on, that could easily be Barney pulling some scam to meet chicks.

MARSHALL: I’m one step ahead of you (he pulls out his phone)

BARNEY (at his office): Go for Barney!

MARSHALL: Barney, hey it’s Marshall. So you are at work? You’re not, I don’t know, driving a car, wearing a wig?

BARNEY: Yes, I’m at work. That’s the sound of my stapler (he staples into the air), that’s the sound of my 3 hole punch (he makes the 3 hole punch motion), and this is the sound of me filing my corporate guidelines on sexual harassment. What is up? Gotta go Big Chief!

MARSHALL: Barney’s at work. That- that was the 5th doppleganger.

LILY: Marshall Erickson, put a baby in my belly.
