English Expressions That Will Impress Your Crush

There are a lot of different reasons to learn a language. You become more employable the better your language skills are, it makes traveling a lot easier, and it opens your mind up to a whole new culture. But there is another reason to learn a language, and that is love.

Perhaps you have your eye on somebody but you just don’t have enough confidence in your language skills to talk to them. Maybe it’s the guy who works in your local supermarket, or the girl who serves you coffee every morning, or perhaps it’s just someone who you see on a bus or on the street. Whatever the circumstances, here are some foolproof ways to start a conversation with somebody you have your eye on, bringing you one step closer to riding off into the sunset with them.

Introductions

Perhaps one of the hardest parts of getting to know somebody is actually finding a way to talk talk to them.

1. “Sorry, but do I know you from somewhere? You look so familiar…”

This is a great excuse to start a conversation with somebody. Just pretend that you recognise them from somewhere and before you know, it you’re in a conversation.

2. “Sorry, I’m a bit lost, do you know where ‘…..’ is?”

Much like the first one on the list, this one is all about lying in order to get your ‘foot in the door’. OK so ‘lying’ sounds a little bad… How about ’embellishing the truth.‘

3. “Excuse me, where did you get your dress (shirt/blouse etc), it’s really nice and I need to get a present for my sister/brother.”

So this one requires a good deal of confidence. If you see someone you like and need a way to get talking to them, simply approach them and tell them you want to know where they bought an item of their clothing, because you think it will suit a friend or family member. This will also flatter them and open up some dialogue.

4. “Oh wow! It’s you! I loved you in that film where you were fighting robots… Oh, it wasn’t you?”

So these are pretty much all lies, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. It’s getting harder and harder to meet new people in the real world now with social networking sites so you have to be a little creative. If you pretend that the person you are trying to talk to reminds you of a movie star then they will be flattered and it could start a pretty interesting conversation.

Once you have the conversation started it’s really up to you to keep it going. My advice would be to ask a lot of questions about them so that you seem interested, but not so much as to scare them away or seem desperate. It’s a delicate balance.

Once you get to know them a little

So you’ve managed to ‘break the ice’, maybe you’ve gotten their number or have arranged to meet up sometime, where do you go from here?

1. “You look really nice today.”

Simple, classic and always effective. This one makes the person feel good about themselves, and if you can make them feel good about themselves, then you’re on the right path.

2. “I have a hard time meeting people because I’m so busy with work.”

This will tell them that you are a hard worker, which is generally seen as a good quality by most people (but not by all! Avoid this line if you are trying to impress a punk rocker or an anarchist).

3. “I’m single because I’m waiting for the right person.”

This will show them that you don’t fool around with the first person who comes into your life, and it might make them want to be ‘the right person’ for you.

4. “I feel a little silly saying this is in English so ‘……..’”

Never underestimate the attractiveness of your own language. English speakers especially find foreign languages and accents very attractive and love to hear them. If you tell them that you have something to say to them, but feel silly saying it in English, and then say it in your own language, the mystery alone is enough to make them go crazy.

Once you know them better

Now that you’ve gotten to know each other a little better, it’s time to really let them know how you feel.

1. “I don’t know why, but I feel like I’ve known you my whole life.”

This line will let the other person know that you feel like you have a special connection to them and make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

2. “I had a dream about you last night…”

If you tell them that you had a dream about them then you are basically telling them that you have been thinking about them a lot. It will also make the other person extremely interested as they will start to wonder how they appeared in your dream. Dreams are very powerful and mysterious, so you want them to know that they are a part of your dreaming experience. The expression ‘Man/Woman of my dreams’ isn’t around for no reason! You can make up pretty much anything after this; eg “I had a dream about you last night… we were alone on a beach drinking wine and looking up at the stars…”

3. “Would you like to go out sometime?”

So you’ve gotten this far. You’ve introduced yourself and gotten to know them a bit and let them know very subtly that you have a crush on them. Now comes the real test, do they like you also? Do they want to go out on a date with you? There’s only one way to find out and that is to ask. If you are not successful and they turn you down, oh well, there are plenty more fish in the sea. If they say yes then congratulations, you can stop playing games with them and start being yourself.

Whereas the list above is more about phrases that will help you get to know somebody, this list is more about chat up lines which you would be more likely to use on a night out at a bar or club.

WARNING: Use with caution. More often than not these are just cheesy and will send people running in the other direction, but you never know, they might see the humor in it.
